Volunteers Needed to Assist in METCO Director Search Process 

The Weston Public Schools is seeking volunteers to serve on the Search Committee for the new METCO Director. The Search Committee consists of administrators, staff, students, and parents. Participation on the committee requires a substantial time commitment of afternoon/evening meetings in February. If you are interested in serving on the Search Committee, please send a letter and/or email to Dr. Cheryl Maloney, Superintendent, Weston Public Schools, 89 Wellesley Street, Weston, MA 02493 by January 24, indicating: 1) why you wish to serve, and 2) what you can offer as a member of the committee.  The first Search Committee meeting will be Wednesday, February 1 from 4:30-6pm in the small conference room at Case House.  Since we expect more volunteers than can be accommodated, we will make every effort to select a balanced and representative group for the committee. Please continue to watch our website, Westword, the Town Crier, and Weston Grapevine as more information will be forthcoming.

Reminder: Boston Weston/METCO Parent Organization (BWMPO) Meeting 

The next Boston Weston/METCO Parent Organization (BWMPO) meeting will be held on Thursday, Jan 19, 7-9pm, at the Mildred Ave Middle School, 5 Mildred Ave., Mattapan.  This meeting is an Academic Forum discussing the transitions between Field School to Middle School, and Middle School to High School.  Discussion will also include how students are assisted both academically and socially, as well as student assistance in the areas of ERB and MCAS testing.  In attendance for the forum will be: Principals Matt Lucey and John Gibbons along with other faculty from each school; Theresa Dryden, Howard Horner and David Fuller.  Questions?  Cheryl Antoine, BWMPO Chair (617-407-7464).

Great Opportunity to Get Involved!  

There are openings on the WEEFC (Weston Education Enrichment Fund Committee) Board for the 2011-2012 school year.  WEEFC, a sub-committee of the School Committee, is a parent organization that raises and distributes funds in the form of grants to support innovative and creative programs across all schools and grades. PTO Nominations Begin

If you would like to join the PTO Board, or if you would like to nominate someone

to serve for the 2012-2013 school year please let us know! Names are gathered, passed by the nominating committee,vetted through a process beginning in mid Jan. Our final slate will be presented in April. Please check out the PTO website to see what positions are on the board! 6th Annual Gospel Jubilee: Saturday, January 28th   

Join us for an afternoon of musical celebration at the 6th Annual Gospel Jubilee, Saturday, January 28th from 4-6pm, at Weston High School. Weston's own cappella groups (Town Criers and Pralines) and area gospel choirs including the Boston Children's Theatre Youth Choir are not to be missed! Tickets are available at the door $15/person or $45 per family (up to 5).  Proceeds go to support the Weston METCO Programs and the BWMPO Scholarship Fund. Questions? Contact Madelaine Kenyon. Country School Spring Concert: Date Change 

The Country School Spring Concert date has changed. Please mark your calendars with the following new information: Thursday, May 17th at 8:45am for Grades 2 & 3, Orchestra & Chorus and 10am for Preschool, Kindergarten and Grade 1.  

Country School: searching for an accomplished pianist  

Mrs. Osborn, our Second & Third Grade Music teacher and Chorus and Orchestra instructor, is looking for a reasonably accomplished pianist to accompany the chorus. A parent, friend or relative of a Country School student would be a great match! Please contact Susan Osborn directly if interested.

Kindergarten Readers Parent Forum 

Please join us for the "Kindergarten Readers" Parent Forum on Thursday, Jan 19th from 9:15-11am in the Woodland School Library. The forum will be led by Lynda Steinberg, our Elementary Reading and Writing Specialist, as well as Christie Wyman and Kim Burgess, Kindergarten teachers at Country and Woodland Schools, respectively. The session will provide an overview of what to expect from your kindergartener as they begin to develop their reading skills. Parents of kindergarteners at both Country and Woodland are encouraged to attend. Please contact Nancy Trodden with any questions. 

Creative Arts performance: Ball in the House 

On January 20th, at 9am and 10am, Boston based Acapella group, Ball in the House will be performing at the Country School for grades K-3.  Parents are welcome to attend this wonderful performance.  

WCCA "Sleepunder" Family Movie Night 

Join K-3 kids and their parents and siblings for a 'Sleepunder' Family Movie Night!  On Friday, Jan 20, pizza will be served and then kids will watch the movie Despicable Me in the Woodland Cafeteria. While the movie is playing, parents can enjoy potluck appetizers in an adjoining room. Give Your Pants a Second Chance  

Check out your closets and open those drawers.  If your pants don't fit, donate them to a great cause.  From Monday, January 23rd through Friday, February 3rd, the PTO will hold its 3rd annual pants drive to benefit Cradles to Crayons.  Cradles to Crayons helps provide children with the basics of life - free of charge.  New or gently used pants may be dropped off in the lobbies of Field, Country, or Woodland Schools.  Please contact Laura Miller or Cristen Tabors with any questions.

Wanted: Scientists to help "Jumpstart" Weston 10th grade biology students into research

Students design and carry out an independent research project and we hope you would like to be a part of it. The PTO Science and Math Council is recruiting community members to help students clarify their experiment and projects. Advisors meet with students on Feb 2 and 3 during regular class blocks. Time commitments can be as short as 1.5 hours and as long as 2 days. Advisor background should be in science, research, medicine, or other health backgrounds. Easy Enrollment click here.Questions? Parent Ed Speaker: Raising Healthy Teens in Challenging Times

On Tuesday, Jan 24th at 7pm in the Weston High School Media Center: "Raising Healthy Teens in Challenging Times", a presentation by Dr. Robert Evans, Ed.D.   The discussion will focus on the challenges of raising competent, caring children and offer concrete suggestions to address.  Dr. Evans is a clinical and organizational psychologist and the Executive Director of The Human Relations Service.  Sponsored by Weston PTO and Weston Health and Wellness Project.

After School Book Clubs

The Weston Public Library is offering three new session of After School Book Clubs for kids in grades 1-5.  First, second and third graders can choose either our Tuesday or Thursday session.  Children take bus #6 to Field School, where they're met by a librarian and walk over to the library in a group to listen to a story and discuss books they're reading.  Pick up is at 3:15.  Fourth and fifth graders can sign up for our Monday session. Cards, Cookies & Cocoa

Jump into the winter season and join us on Wednesday, February 1st (early release day) from 1-2:15pm in the Weston Public Library's Community Room to learn how to create animal greeting cards made of paper heart shapes.  Snack on cookies and sip some hot cocoa while listening to stories.  Open to children in grades K-5.  Please email Patty Dacey to RSVP as space is limited. 

WCCA Pancake Breakfast

Bring your family to join friends at the WCCA Pancake Breakfast for pancakes, fruit, bagels, coffee, and hot chocolate on Saturday, January 28th from 8-10am at Weston High School.  There will also be stories, crafts, and a visit from Clifford the Big Red Dog. Amnesty International benefit for Invisible Children

Amnesty International is hosting a benefit concert for Invisible Children on Saturday, January 21st from 4-8pm in the Weston High School cafeteria. Cost is $10 per person. Performances include Town Criers, Pralines, and more! Contact Deniz Cataltepe or Edom Wessenyeleh if you are interested in donating to the organization or performing at the concert. Food donations for the concert are also appreciated!  Invisible Children helps child soldiers and war struck communities in Eastern Africa. Family Fun Day at the Spellman Museum

Regis College Sat. Jan. 28 Noon-4pm. Make snowmen, snowflakes and snowballs using postage stamps plus create winter stamp mosaics. Play stamp games and do stamp puzzles for prizes. Arts and crafts with stamps. Design your own winter stamps. Have your photo made into a stamp. Create your own envelopes and cards to send to friends (including Valentine's cards). The Museum pays the postage. Free packet of stamps for each child. Free refreshments. Gift shop open. Special exhibit of Winter sports on stamps. Wear your mittens or earmuffs and get a special stamp gift. Coming Sunday, Feb. 5 - A visit from the Higgins Armory Museum.

Discussing Topics of Crime and Safety with Pre-School & Early Elementary Aged Children

What is the best way to discuss the scary topics of crime and "bad people" with children?  How do we answer our children's questions about the crime they see in the media?  On Wednesday, Feb 1st, Weston Police Officer Kelley Connarton will provide parents with strategies for discussing the difficult topics of crime and safety with our pre-school and early elementary-aged children.  Light refreshments will be available at 7pm, followed by Officer Connarton from 7:15-9pm.  Sponsored by the WCCA, this event is being held at a private home in Weston.  For event location and to RSVP, please email Nicole Papas.

Weston 300 Questionnaire and Upcoming Meeting

As you probably already know, the Town of Weston established a Committee to
coordinate activities for Weston's 300th Anniversary Celebrations in 2013. There are two things you can do now: Complete a Questionnaire.  This lists some possibilities and is one way you can let us know your thoughts. To get one, contact Pat Gowdy.  If you can, please reply to us by January 23. The next Weston300 town-wide meeting will be Thursday, Feb 9th at 7pm at the Weston Community Center.   

6th Grade Parent Social Gathering

The 6th grade potluck dinner will be on Saturday, January 28th from 6:30-10pm at the home of Rob and Justine Morris, 53 Shady Hill Rd. Please bring an appetizer or dessert to share, as well as beverage of your choice. RSVP to Mariana Hersum with number of people and food item you plan to bring.  

Class of 2015 Parent Discussion Group

Please join the Class of 2015 Parent Discussion Group on Friday, Jan 20 at 9:15am for our first meeting of the year. We will meet at the home of Claudia Krimsky (111 Radcliffe Road) to talk about any academic and social issues of interest to the group, which welcomes all parents and caregivers of 9th Graders. 11th Grade Parent Discussion Group
